2018 Honda Fit Safety

The 2018 Honda Fit is a critically acclaimed compact that boasts many technology and comfort and convenience features that make it a great choice for any Detroit area driver. The Fit really shines with its advanced safety features available across its LX, Sport, EX, and EX-L trim options. The five-door compact is an excellent option for any driver looking for an efficient and safe vehicle. Let’s take a closer look at what makes the Honda Fit such a safe option in the segment.

Active Safety

The new Fit comes equipped with a host of active safety features standard on all models that help to prevent or mitigate damage in the event that an accident occurs.

  • Vehicle Stability Assist: This system helps to stabilize the vehicle when oversteering or understeering id detected. It helps you maintain traction on loose or slippery and wet road conditions by adjusting the engine’s power output and applying braking accordingly.
  • Advanced Braking: The Fit’s anti-lock brake system keeps your wheels from locking up while keeping traction and reducing braking distance. The electronic brake distribution system varies the amount of force applied to each of the wheels based on speed, road conditions, and other factors. Couple all this with brake assist, which allows drivers to come to a stop more quickly in instances of emergency braking, and you have a reliably advanced braking system that won’t let you down.
  • Multi-Angle Rearview Camera: The rearview camera system gives you three views—wide, normal, and top-down—to ensure your path is clear when navigating out of tight or crowded spots.
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System: Always know if your tires are under- or overinflated with a tire pressure indicator right on the dash. Under- or overinflated tires can result in reduced traction and loss of control, so keeping them properly inflated is important.
  • Daytime Running Lights: Automatically switched on when the ignition is engaged, daytime running lights will make your vehicle more visible to other motorists and pedestrians during daylight hours.

Honda’s signature Honda Sensing suite of active safety systems comes standard on the LX and Sport CVT models as well as the EX and EX-L trims. The systems are designed to further help you avoid collisions.

  • Forward Collision Warning: A camera mounted between the windshield and the rearview mirror will signal the system audible warning to give you a visual and when a vehicle is detected in front of your Fit, and if action is not taken, will blink and beep continuously until the path is corrected or the detected vehicle is no longer present.
  • Lane Departure Warning: A special camera is designed to recognize lane markings, and if the vehicle begins to move out of a detected lane without signaling, the driver is alerted with audible and visual warnings.
  • Collision Mitigation Braking System: When an otherwise unavoidable collision with a vehicle is detected by the radar sensor in front of you, this system helps brake the vehicle. The automatic braking will minimize the chances of a collision.
  • Road Departure Mitigation System: This system alerts the driver when drifting is detected without the use of a turn signal and is able to apply steering torque to assist the driver in maintaining the lane position; it can also engage the brakes to slow the vehicle when it is inadvertently moving out of its lane.

Driver-Assistance Technology

Driver-assistance technology works like a copilot to help you keep control of the vehicle and make you more aware of possible hazards around you.

  • Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS): At speeds over 45 mph, the LKAS will provide steering torque to help keep the vehicle centered when it is detected to be moving out of the lane without using a turn signal. The LKAS will apply more steering force the farther from the center of the lane the vehicle is.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC): When a slower-moving vehicle is detected in front of the Fit, the ACC system will adjust the speed to match the speed of the slower vehicle and accelerate back to the set cruising speed when the vehicle is no longer in the path of the Fit.

EX and EX-L Fit models include the exclusive Honda LaneWatch system, which automatically turns on a monitor and gives you a view of what’s in your blind spot when the turn signal is engaged.

Passive Safety

The Honda Fit is loaded with passive safety features that help to mitigate injury if an unavoidable accident occurs. The Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure of the Fit works to direct crash energy away from the driver and passengers, while the front, side, and side curtain airbags minimize the risk of injury in a collision. The three-point seat belts at all seating positions will keep you and your passengers safe in high-velocity accidents. The Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children (LATCH) system easily allows you to install a child safety seat securely, and the child-proof rear door locks prevent little ones form accidentally exiting the vehicle.
