If you asked one of our team members at a Detroit Area Honda Dealer what the best crossover 2015 has to offer, we think that many of them would say the 2015 Honda CR-V (we’re saving the new HR-V for the 2016 title). The CR-V gives drivers a wide range of options across four trim levels, provides car-like handling while maintaining SUV versatility, and has a new engine that helps boost its fuel economy even further ahead of the competition.

Maybe that’s why the 2015 CR-V won the Today/MotorWeek Compact SUV Challenge?

Critics and Drivers Praise the CR-V

This Compact SUV Challenge pitted the CR-V against six of the most competitive small crossovers on the road, and both critics and drivers agreed that the CR-V came out on top, praising it for its mixture of interior space, visibility, family-friendly amenities, and overall rewarding driving experience.

In order to be eligible for the challenge, each vehicle had to be priced at less than $28,000 and needed to have an EPA-estimated fuel economy rating of at least 26 mpg combined city/highway.

Patrick Olsen, the Editor-in-Chief of, described the appeal of the CR-V: “[It] came out on top because it provided the best blend of good interior room, excellent visibility and a surprisingly rewarding driving experience. The CR-V was also packed with great family-friendly features like easy-to-fold seats, a low load floor, rear air vents and much more.”

The CR-V received some significant upgrades for the 2015 model year, including a more powerful, more efficient engine that helped raise its fuel economy to a whole new level:

  • Under the hood of each CR-V is a 2.4L four-cylinder engine with 185 hp and 181 lb-ft of torque.
  • 2015 CR-V 2WD models earn an EPA-estimated 34 highway mpg and 27 city mpg,* making them some of the most efficient crossovers available.

Factor in Honda’s suite of high-tech standard amenities and the CR-V’s four different trim levels, and it’s easy to see why it came out on top.
